Default KJ Verada ( non AWD ) Catalytic Converter

    Hi Guys.
Great site. Has been very helpful over the past year or so.
First post on behalf of my daughter. I have a suspicion the cat may need replacing. Rotten egg smell. High fuel consumption. I will be looking at the fuel side first and replacing the oxy sensor.
My main question is whether all the 3rd generation 6g74 cats interchangeable. Is the Verada different ? Just wanted to be up to speed before making calls.
    Many Thanks.

I'm also curious as to why cat repairs are 'so expensive', hundreds or even >$1000 dollars, according to the internet - wtf?

I picked up a 2.5" (universal) redback 300cpi metal substrate 409 steel cat for $160 with heat shield but does it cost bloody $600 to fit? Don't you just cut the old one out and put new one in? Like a muffler, should only cost like idk ~$85 to fit? The piping is straight where the cat is too so no mandrel bent pipes etc. I have no idea.

So is it better to get factory fit or universal?

All TJ/KJ's should be interchangeable at least, not sure about other models.

I THINK most exhaust components from TH/TJ are compatible, and the muffler is TE-TJ

Also, you posted in the wrong forum so you might not get many replies (should be under 3rd generation section not AWD)

Extractors & *rear muffler are TE-TJ compatible. Rest of it is TH/TJ only.

Don't know what your best option is. If it's cheap enough maybe just get a good quality/branded universal 400cpi catalytic converter fitted?

Front Exhaust pipe: Mitsubishi Magna TH TJ / Verada KE, KF, KH and KJ 3.5l
    Catalytic converter: ????? (Im guessing TH/TJ 3.5L only) ??????
Centre muffler and piping: MITSUBISHI MAGNA TH TJ 3.5L
PACEMAKER HEADERS EXTRACTORS: TE TF TH TJ 3.0L & 3.5L V6
    Rear Muffler: TE TF TH TJ, 2.4L & 3L & 3.5L

KJ Verada should have the same compatibility as a TJ Magna I assume. Hope somebody else can help you arrive at the most economical choice I'm not very knowledgeable.

    Hi Ricciardo.
Thanks for the detailed response. I thought someone may have known off the top of their head. But still greatly appreciated.
I've been getting conflicting part numbers off different sites. Even different numbers for TJ1 and TJ2. ????
    But thanks again.
    Cheers

Ok, lets clear some things up here

For starters no they are not all compatible at all

The TE and TF has a shorter cat, the rear flange to the muffler was smaller than than the later 3.5 models

The TH and TJ had a longer cat, larger flange at the rear muffler and centre section was 120mm shorter to allow the longer cat.

The TL and TW had a longer cat again and was further forward as well. Rear muffler had same flange as the TH, TJ

The engine pipes on ALL 3.5 were compatible UP UNITL the TL which has a shorter engine pipe.

You can use the centre section from a TL on a 3.0 TE or TF IF you use the rear muffler as well (for the larger flange)

    This is all for FWD

Now AWD, this is where it gets nasty. The TJ AWD had the muffler flange under the rear sub frame which hung down so on the TL they moved it back to about 4" behind the muffler. They also used the longer cat BUT in the same location as the TJ thus they changed the centre pipe as well. While I have modified and fitted a TL cat, centre section and muffler to a TJ it is a PITA of a job to do

In relation to cats, there were 3 different cats

TE - TF was a short one
TH - TJ was 120mm longer
TL - TW was 30mm longer again

Now for the cost of cats, the universal ones are significantly cheaper because they are much smaller to start with and do not have the same precious metals in them as a genuine cat thus are MUCH cheaper to make. As an example for a USED TL cat we get $120 each from the cat Recyclers as they remove the precious metals during the process. An aftermarket cat we get $10 for.

Hope above makes sense, is a little hard to explain in text

I was hoping for a relatively simple DIY job with new flange gaskets. I am considering a second hand cat from someone wrecking privately or a wrecker. So was interested in what models were suitable. TH or TJ, I guess ( thanks Mad ). I realise a used cat could be an 'iffy' proposition. Would a 'shake and sniff' test be OK. Or should I just forget used entirely ????
    Thanks
